How To Remove Stains From Floor Tiles With Simple Methods
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

How to remove stains from floor tiles? This question used to make me crazy for a very long time as I was extremely displeased with the ugly stains that seemed to never get out of my house.

Fortunately, after years of trying countless methods (and failing over and over), I eventually find out the most efficient and simplest ways to remove these nuisances from my floor tiles.

And now, it is time for me to share these little secrets to people who are facing the same problems to help them have a clean and beautiful home.

Here we go!

Method 1: Utilizing Household Cleaners

1.1. Using bleach/hydrogen peroxide

Using bleach/hydrogen peroxide to clean

Necessary items:

➤ A cup/bowl
➤ One or two rags
➤ 3% strength hydrogen peroxide/bleach
➤ Water

Step-by-step instructions:

#Step 1: Soak the rag in a cup/bowl of bleach or 3% strength hydrogen peroxide for a few minutes

#Step 2: Take the rag to dab stains. For tougher smudges, lay the rag on them for 60 – 90 minutes and scrub them thoroughly.

#Step 3: After you have eliminated the stains from tiles, wash your floor tiles with clean water immediately because the cleaning solution is corrosive and is likely to eat through your floor.

Pro Tips:

❖ Both bleach and hydrogen peroxide are efficient for removing coffee stains, juice, bloodstains, ink, and nail polish on finished or ceramic tiles.
❖ You can clean your tile with dilute bleach or hydrogen peroxide in a less visible area to check whether there would be any unwanted effects.

1.2. Use scouring powder

Use scouring powder to remove stains from floor tiles

Necessary items:

➤ Water
➤ Scouring powder
➤ A rag or an abrasive sponge

Step-by-step instructions:

#Step 1: Use water to wet the stain a bit.

#Step 2: Sprinkle a decent amount of scouring powder onto stains to cover them completely.

#Step 3: Mix the scouring powder gently with a tad of water and leave the paste there for several minutes for the effects to start kicking in.

#Step 4: Use the rag or abrasive sponge to wipe the stains.

#Step 5: After the stains disappear, wash your floor tiles thoroughly with clean water.

Pro Tips:

❖ Make sure that there is no powder left on your floor since some chemicals in scouring powders may have negative reactions with other cleaners.

1.3. Using Borax powder

Using Borax powder

Necessary items:

➤ A small cup
➤ Water
➤ Borax powder
➤ An abrasive sponge

Step-by-step instructions:

#Step 1: Mix 400 g of Borax with 59 ml of water thoroughly inside the cup.

#Step 2: Dip the abrasive sponge in the mixture.

#Step 3: Take the sponge out to scrub the stains with it until they fade away.

#Step 4: Wash the area with water again.

Pro Tips:

❖ Borax is only appropriate for finished tiles like marble, ceramic, or porcelain tile.
❖ A mixture between 50 g of Borax and 3.8 liters of water can be an ideal cleaning agent for daily use.

Method 2: Using Natural Solutions

2.1. Using club soda

Using club soda to remove stains from floor tiles

Necessary items:

➤ Club soda
➤ Water
➤ A rag
➤ An abrasive sponge

Step-by-step instructions:

#Step 1: Pour a decent amount of club soda on the stains (make sure that the blotches are submerged completely).

#Step 2: Leave it there for a while (around 5 – 10 minutes) . The carbonation within the club soda will then begin its job and lift the fatty/sugary stains.

#Step 3: Use the rag to wipe the liquid remained.

#Step 4: Use the abrasive sponge to scrub against the stains.

#Step 5: Clean the spots with clean water.

Pro Tips:

❖ Club soda is best for cleaning sugary stains (e.g., spillage of Coca Cola, Red Bull, so on), oil, grease, and other fat-based stains.
❖ Use a club soda without flavors and sugar so that you can clean up the tiles more quickly without attracting ants. Things that remove the stains are carbonation and water rather than flavors and sugar.

2.2. Using strong cleaning vinegar

Necessary items:

➤ Some strong cleaning vinegar
➤ An abrasive sponge
➤ Water

Step-by-step instructions:

#Step 1: Pour a bit of cleaning vinegar onto the abrasive sponge.

#Step 2: Use the sponge to scrub dirty residue off grout lines.

#Step 3: Use water to clean the area again.

Pro Tips:

❖ Never mix any cleaning agents such as baking soda with vinegar because this can result in the loss of the cleaning effects of all substances.
❖ Cooking vinegar is okay, but strong cleaning vinegar will work better against tough stains.
❖ White vinegar is excellent for cleaning grouts, stains on ceramic tiles, and stain removal on other household ceramics like sinks, toilets, and bathtubs.

2.3. Using baking soda

Necessary items:

➤ A cup/bowl
➤ Baking soda
➤ Water
➤ A toothbrush
➤ A clean rag

Step-by-step instructions:

#Step 1: Mix baking soda with water in the prepared cup/bowl at the ratio of 3:1.

#Step 2: Stir the mixture until it becomes pasty.

#Step 3: Use the toothbrush to scrub the paste onto the stains.

#Step 4: Rinse the tiles with water and wipe them several times with the wet rag.

Pro Tips:

❖ This method is only suitable for non-ceramic tiles, and it is also the only way to clean unglazed tiles and slate.
❖ Baking soda and water is often used to treat tiny stains, but they can be fairly good choices for cleaning tiles with larger stains as well, provided that you scrub the floor multiple times.

2.4. Using lemon juice

Using lemon juice

Necessary items:

➤ A cup/bowl
➤ Lemon juice
➤ A rag or a sponge
➤ Warm water

Step-by-step instructions:

#Step 1: After extracting some pure lemon juice, pour it on the stains, and leave the liquid there for a few minutes.

#Step 2: Soak the sponge or the rag into the lemon juice and use the item to scrub against the stains until they are totally lifted.

#Step 3: Use warm water to wash the tile floor.

Pro Tips:

❖ You should only apply this method to finished tiles such as porcelain or ceramic instead of slate tiles or stones. Or else, the acidity within the lemon juice may leave unremovable marks on the tiles.

Method 3: Using Ice to Get Rid Of Sticky Stains

Using Ice to Get Rid Of Sticky Stains

Necessary items:

➤ A plastic bag
➤ Ice
➤ A wooden stick
➤ Some paint thinner
➤ A rag or an abrasive sponge
➤ Water

Step-by-step instructions:

#Step 1: Put some ice into a plastic bag and place it over gummy stains such as tar, gum, glue, or wax. After 30 to 60 minutes, lift  the ice bag up to check whether the stain has already become solidified or not.

#Step 2: Once the tile stains have become solid, use the wooden stick to scrape them.

(You may need to repeat these two steps again and again until most of the stains are removed)

#Step 3: Use the rag or abrasive sponge soaked in paint thinner to chip away the remaining parts of the stains.

#Step 4: Clean the area with water.

Pro Tips:

❖ A freezer bag would work more efficiently on larger and thicker stains.
❖ Never use a ceramic or metal stick because they may damage your tiles.
❖ Choose a suitable abrasive sponge that is safe for your tile’s materials.
